Nigeria, Canada Strengthen Ties, Renew Security Commitments

OTTAWA, Canada, April 24, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird of Canada met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria Olugbenga Ashiru, in Ottawa on Monday, April 23, 2012; where the ministers signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a binational commission designed to strengthen bilateral relations, thereby increasing economic and security cooperation between the two countries.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria Olugbenga Ashiru, in Ottawa on Monday, April 23, 2012.

Canada’s relations with Nigeria are strong and getting stronger. The countries’ shared values, institutions and people-to-people ties are pillars of this relationship.

Canada and Nigeria have maintained diplomatic relations for over 50 years and share a commitment to freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. They have also cooperated closely in multilateral forums, particularly through providing peacekeeping support in Sudan.

Nigeria is Canada’s largest bilateral merchandise trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa.
