InformAfrica – A Nigerian man in the Abuja region of Africa’s most populous nation has been sentenced to serve a mere 9 months in jail for raping a 7 year old girl – this is unbelievable and improper justice.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that an Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada area of Abuja on Friday (today) sentenced a 23-year-old man by the name Sule Adamu to serve only nine months imprisonment for raping a seven-year-old girl.
The Judge, known as Alhaji Babangida Hassan, ordered that the convict is required to serve the first six month in jail, but gave him an option of N15,000 Naira (about $91 USD), fine for the last three months of his jail term.
The police Prosecutor, Insp. Martha Paul, had told the court that the convict was a neighbour to the victim and that the incident happened on June 8.
Paul said the convict was arrested on June 10, following complaint lodged in at Gwagwalada Police Station by one Dennis Bulus, the father of the victim.
The prosecutor said Bulus got knowledge of the incident following complaint of injury in the private part of his daughter and change in her movement steps.
She said the convict was arraigned on one count charge of rape of a minor and the convict pleaded guilty to the charge.
During court proceedings, the sex offender begged the judge for leniency stating that the offence had already been committed.
The judge therefore considered the sex offender’s plea, and only sentenced him to six months imprisonment without option of fine and another three months imprisonment with an option of N15,000 fine, according to reports by Nigeria News Agency.
This is an unjust verdict. Sex offenders, especially pedophiles in this case, should never be sentenced to serve a mere 6 to 9 months in jail for destroying the very young life of a 7 year old girl.
The judge, who only sentenced Adamu to serve 9 months in jail with an option for bail after serving just 6 months, ought to be questioned and possibly arraigned before a high court for such improper and biased justice. It is possible that the judge was bribed to give such nepotistic judgement.
In other scenarios, pedophiles are often sentenced to a minimum of at least 10 years in jail for such evil act. InformAfrica recently reported about a Ghanaian man who was sentenced to a full 15 years in jail for raping a 12 year old girl in Ghana; this is more of a fair and disciplinary judgement that future or potential pedophiles will consider when thinking of committing such act. Have Your Say On InformAfrica: In your opinion, would you say that the Nigerian judge in this case gave an appropriate judgement of just 9 months in jail to a pedophile who raped a 7 year old? If pedophiles are giving such little jail sentences; most likely, they would commit such immoral acts more often and our young ones will be endangered.
