InformAfrica — Welcome to Africa, a continent full of hopes and opportunities that awaits the right solutions to fulfill the ambitions of its ever growing population. The Akon Lighting Africa program believes sustainable energy programs are the solution to Africa’s energy crisis.
Out of over 1 billion population, over 600 million people in Africa lack access to electricity and live in quasi total obscurity when the sun set. The Akon Lighting Africa program bring answers to that problem. Their solution? Equip millions of households in Africa with tailored solar energy systems through public-private partnerships.
“In this project, what’s so important by it. It’s also done and shaded by children of Africa. From Akon to Samba Bathily, to myself.” —Thione Niang, Co-founder / Akon Lighting Africa
“As an African, I always want to be in the position where I come back and give back; and be able to use my celebrity, use my success in a way I can help people.” —Akon
“Everyone is so passionate about this program. Be it government officials, through our public-private partnerships, or the population. —Samba Bathily, Co-founder / Akon Lighting Africa
The Akon Lighting Africa team has already installed in 11 countries and counting, two types of solar panels, designed to meet the needs for populations: solar street lights for public lighting and a home service system that is prepaid for household use.
The very idea of the initiative is to create jobs for the youth of rural areas. Beyond access to electricity, the project is about economic empowerment and inclusive growth for the continent.
The mission of Akon Lighting Africa, is to prepare a brighter future for children and the African continent.
